Learn about the Hosta – Grow them up big and strong!

View the full range of hosta plants onlineA little information about the humble Hosta

Named after Dr. Nicholaus Host, physician to the emperor of Austria (1761–1834). Countless hybrids have been raised, mainly in the United States in recent years.  They are all clump forming and can become quite large with time, hence need to be divided every 3-5 years once established. The leaves can be large or small  in different shades of green, yellow, greyish blue, or variegated.  In high summer they bear one-sided racemes of funnel-shaped flowers that can range in colour from lilac to white.
Learn about the Hosta

All are hardy and prefer fertile, moist, well-drained soil in full to partial shade, making a good ground cover under deep-rooted deciduous trees, although they will take full sun if watered regularly. They can be used as ground cover under deep-rooted deciduous trees.

Hosta’s evoke the lush look of many tropical plants, with their luxuriant foliage, the only draw back is that slugs and snails absolutely adore them! I grow mine in large containers with  about 2ins of Vaseline smeared around the base of the pot to stop slugs and snails slithering up!  There are far too many forms to mention here, so I will only cover only a few of the largest.

All Hosta like to be well fed and especially if you want the largest leaves! Use well rotted  garden compost, blood-fish and bone or pelleted chicken manure around the base of each clump as they start to emerge in the spring.  They also like regular moisture especial when grown in pots where they should be watered daily.

Actinidia deliciosa Kiwi fruit ‘Issai’ online | Mini kiwi fruit

Check Exotic Plants PricesBuy Actinidia deliciosa Kiwi fruit ‘Issai’ online Actinidia deliciosa or kiwifruit is a fast growing climbing plant native to southern China.  It is a delightful and very exotic looking climber with dark green foliage on brown twining stems that can easily be Buy Actinidia deliciosa Kiwi fruit 'Issai' onlinegrown in the more southerly parts of the UK as it takes frost well and has taken -11C in my Norfolk garden without any damage.

It is usual associated with New Zealand where it is gown en mass and exported around the world as a delicious semi-tropical fruit.  It is dioecious, meaning that both male and female vines must be planted together to produce fruit. Luckily though there are a few self pollinating  variety’s like  ‘Jenny’ which I grow and fruits very well though best results are obtained in a warm summer.  ‘Issai’ is another with slightly smaller fruits that are bite sized and don’t need peeling so can be eaten straight from the vine. All kiwis are fairly rampant so need to be grown on a strong framework. They will  start to produce fruit after about the third year. Very long lateral shoots are produced through the summer which should be cut back to the main plant in late winter, otherwise you will have a monster on your hands!

Olive trees online – Olea europaea

Check Exotic Plants PricesBuy Olive trees online – Olea europaea A tree that many gardeners like to grow even if it doesn’t fruit, because they are so redolent of the Mediterranean. They need the protection of a south or west facing wall or warm microclimate in a sunny position in very well drained soil. olive tree

It is an evergreen, slow growing long lived tree,  growing to a height and spread of 10m (30ft), though much less in the British Isles. In central London they easily grow to 2-3m and probably will do in other protected locations. The leaves are narrowly oblong greyish-green above and silvery beneath. Small fragrant flowers are born in late summer followed by green, becoming dark-purple fruit, commonly known as Olives. They need a very hot summer to ripen, so are mainly grown for their foliage in this country.

Occasionally old specimens can be purchased at great expense, though young sapling trees are more common and relatively cheap. Hardy to -10C (14F) for short periods in a sheltered position, on very well drained soil.

Zantedeschia aethiopica – Arum lily, Crowborough Calla lily.

Check Exotic Plants PricesBuy Zantedeschia Arum lily, Calla lily online. Very exotic looking perennial from South Africa growing from rhizomes up to 1m tall with a 35-45cm spread, though forming large clumps with time. It has lush and lustrous dark green leaves that are arrow-shaped up to30cm  (1ft)  long. The pure white inflorescences (flowers) are from 10-15cm (4-6in) long appearing spring and onwards into summer, with the odd flower at any time. buy Zantedeschia aethiopica lily onlineIn the wild it forms colonies in marshy areas. Zantedeschia aethiopica ‘Crowborough’ is one of the most commonly available to buy and is identical to the species, but with greater hardiness in cooler temperatures like ours here in the UK.

‘Green Goddess’ is a fabulous form bearing a succession of green spathes, (flowers) each with a large radiating central splash of white and also grows up to 1m tall.

Zantedeschia elliottiana or ‘Golden arum lily’ is another beautiful species, growing from 60cm- to 1m with semi-erect basal leaves with random and very conspicuous transparent markings. Although usually considered half-hardy in England, they have overwintered without protection in my Norwich garden for more than a decade with lows of-10°C, (though they do not always flower).

There is a large range of Zantedeschias, referred to in the trade as callas, in a dazzling array of exciting colours, which add greatly to the exotic garden. Many of the new hybrids coming onto the market were created through crossing many of the smaller species.

A form available in the US named Zantedeschia aethiopica gigantea is  ridiculously large, growing to 1.5m or more with huge leaves up to 45cm long with large flowers up to 25cm long  and will become an absolute must for the exotic garden in the years to come…
