It is a popular plant and deservedly so as it a fast growing and very reliable shrub. Being evergreen it has year round appeal and is often used as hedging, especially in windy coastal areas where it makes a good wind break. It has greyish -green leaves with silvery undersides from 8-10cm long. It produces a handsome show of small, highly scented creamy-white flowers in the autumn.
Elaeagnus x ebbingei is tolerant of most growing conditions easily reaching 2-3m tall, though it can be kept pruned to any height desired forming an impenetrable and very impressive hedge with time.
There are some very desirable variegated forms available with names like Elaeagnus x ebbingei ‘Gilt edge’ and Elaeagnus x ebbingei ‘Limelight’.
