Callistemon are evergreen shrubs with aromatic, linear to lance-shaped leaves and bottlebrush-like spikes of flowers with long colourful and very prominent stamens. Callistemon citrinus ‘Splendens’ ‘is a rather lax medium-sized evergreen shrub with slender arching branches giving the whole shrub a very attractive flowing appearance, and grows from 2.5m x 3m under ideal conditions. It is covered with narrow, rather stiff aromatic leaves, and bears bright crimson bottlebrush-like flower spikes from early to mid-summer in profusion – in fact a fully grown pant looks very spectacular indeed!
Unfortunately it can only be grown in the warmest parts of the UK though it makes an excellent cool greenhouse or conservatory plant that can be brought out for the summer months. The leaves will release a delicious lemon scent when crushed. If the leaves are crushed they give of a very strong lemon scent. Pruning is necessary after flowering to maintain dense growth and maximum flowering.
